Our world is full of problems of all kinds that need to be solved. These
problems range from scientific problems (global warming, energy production,
complex system design, immunology, and countless others). In order to solve
these problems we need students who can attack problems that nobody else has
been able to solve yet. The problem is that most traditional schools do not
teach the majority of students the basic skills required to solve these
problems. This is why the Jisan Research Institute is here.
The goal of the Jisan Research Institute is to help students achieve as
scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and doctors. We do this by teaching
skills that most schools do not teach. We use a mechanism scientific
research that reinforces these skills and gives students opportunity to
apply them to real problems.
- We teach students how to learn.
While traditional schools are good at teaching students facts and making them
repeat those facts on tests, they do not teach students to learn. Most students
will think that in order to learn, they must have a class. However, this means
that they are limited to learning topics that are taught in classes. JRI
teaches students to learn. Students with this skill may learn any topic, with
or without a teacher.
- We teach students how to think.
Most traditional schools teach students how to solve specific types of problems
using specific techniques. Math problems are solved with standard techniques
taught during classes. Science problems are likewise solved with methods found
in the books. Few students can generate new solutions to problems not
specifically prepared for in school. Once students learn how to think, problems
they can solve vastly increase. Students can now attack problems they couldn't
solve before with or without help.
- We help students learn how to generate expertise.
Students generate a significant expertise in a field of research while carrying
out research work. The mechanism for generating expertise is the same in any
field is the same, and once mastered, a student may become an expert in any
field. Our students must compete against professional scientists and
engineers. As a result, they are prepared to compete successfully in the
scientific arena. Moreover, they are prepared to discover or design things
none have ever accomplished before, even though some might have tried before.
- We break down mental blocks.
The greatest limitation of any student is what she believes she can do. By
participating on a cutting edge research project, a student will irrevocably
change. Now she knows that there is no goal she cannot achieve, and no field
she cannot master. A student who knows she can conceive a device, build it,
and perfect it faces the world with more drive, determination, and optimism
than any other student.
Students that can accomplish these tasks are different from "normal" students.
They have the ability to percieve solutions where others cannot, and become
leaders in any field. While we work in the field of science, these skills are
not limited to science, and Jisan graduates are now taking their places as
leaders in many fields.
